Student Support to Succeed

Project by: Elimisha Kakuma

For students to fully commit to the program, Elimisha Kakuma provides a $100 monthly stipend as part of their commitment to student support. This policy stems from a harsh reality: many  students have had to choose between pursuing an education or financially supporting their families. In refugee camps, labor laws restrict incentive teachers to salaries of just $70–$80 per month, making it difficult for students to prioritize learning over immediate financial responsibilities.

Without financial support, many of the applicants face the difficult decision of either joining Elimisha Kakuma’s access program or continuing to work to provide for their families. Elimisha Kakuma firmly believes that no refugee student should have to choose between education and survival. This stipend allows students to dedicate themselves fully to the program without needing to take on additional jobs. It alleviates the financial strain on their families and helps cover essential personal expenses, such as toiletries, sanitary products, and basic household needs.

Impact of the Program

Beneficiaries Directly impacted – 16 students for one year, 17 student (cohort 4 for one month)

Indirect Beneficiaries – 330+ family member (estimated household number in the camp is 8-12 family members)

Program Goal

For the incoming Cohort 5, Elimisha Kakuma’s  goal is to support 16 students from April 2025 to April 2026. During this period, Cohorts 4 and 5 will overlap in April for a mentorship month, fostering peer-to-peer support and strengthening our learning community. Elimisha Kakuma has seen firsthand that this stipend keeps students motivated, engaged, and focused on the long-term goal of accessing higher education.
